4 Reasons to Visit an Emergency Vet

Veterinary emergencies are frightening, but they can and do happen. Here are four emergencies pet owners should watch out for:

1. Trauma - Auto accidents, fights with other animals, or accidents in the home can result in skin lacerations, fractures, eye damage and even internal bleeding, all of which call for immediate treatment. Uncontrolled bleeding, shock or infection of the wounds can cause death.

2. Difficult labor - If delivery proceeds especially slowly, your pet may need our emergency vet. Signals of difficult labor include intervals greater than two hours between each puppy or kitten, contractions that take more than an hour, or individual births that take more than 15 minutes.

3. Toxin ingestion - Your home contains a variety of substances poisonous to pets, from automotive fluids and household cleaners to the medicines in your bathroom cabinet. You must keep these substances out of paw's reach at all times. Even many of the food products we eat, such as chocolate, garlic, foods baked with yeast, or coffee, can cause serious health problems if your pet gets into them. If your pet ingests anything toxic, contact our animal hospital immediately for instructions.

4. Heatstroke or hypothermia - Depending on the weather and season, your Chapel Hill or Durham pet may suffer from exposure to either extreme heat or freezing cold. Heatstroke often occurs when an animal spends a significant amount of time under the sizzling sun with insufficient access to water or shade, while hypothermia occurs when the body cannot generate enough heat to maintain body temperature. You can protect your pet from these conditions by providing the appropriate shelter from the elements and never leaving your pet inside the car.
