Surgical Care From Our Durham Veterinarians

common pet surgiesAs a pet owner, the prospect of veterinary surgery may cause you understandable anxiety, but here at New Hope Animal Hospital in Durham we have a great deal of experience and skill in this form of care. Here are just three of the types of pet surgery we perform:

Spay and neuter surgery - Removal of the reproductive organs also removes your pet's risk of testicular or ovarian cancer, and the effect it has on hormone production significantly reduces the risk of breast cancer as well. Neuter surgery is a fairly straightforward procedure in which the testicles are removed through an incision in the scrotum. Spay surgery is more complex because it is more invasive. Both forms of pet surgery, however, are considered routine and present few complications.

Bladder stone removal - Bladder stones are accumulations of minerals that cause pain and traces of blood in the urine. If the stones are large enough to block the urethra, your pet may have difficulty urinating -- a serious condition that can lead to a bladder rupture. Our Durham veterinarians perform a cystotomy to open the bladder and remove the stones. If your pet does not have trouble urinating, the stones may be small enough to treat non-surgically.

Tumor/mass removal - Animals are subject to tumors, cancers, and other masses just as humans are. Skin tumors are fairly common in both cats and dogs, and since most of these are benign, we tend to go ahead and excise the entire tumor for biopsy. A large and/or internal mass may be much trickier to remove, requiring thorough diagnostic imaging to help us see how deeply it extends and how much tissue should be removed to include a safe margin all the way around the tumor.
