The Top 3 Reasons to Spay or Neuter Your Pet
Posted on 2011-11-25 10:43:55
Many people mistakenly believe that spaying or neutering a pet can have harmful results. The reality is that you are not only helping to reduce pet over-population when you spay or neuter your pet, but that you are actually helping them live happier and healthier lives. The following are the top three reasons from our New Hope Animal Hospital in Durham for why you should spay or neuter your pet.
Spaying or Neutering is Veterinarian Recommended
Every year we treat pets in our vet clinic with diseases that could have been prevented by simply having a spay or neuter animal surgery. For example, pyrometra is a painful uterine infection which affects female pets but can be prevented by spaying procedures. Mammary cancer is
another disease that afflicts female pets that is easily prevented by spaying the pet. Male pets are prone to perianal tumors in addition to testicular or prostate cancer. These diseases can all be prevented by neutering your pet.
When you spay your cat or dog you are giving them the chance to be free from back-to-back pregnancies and all related complications. When spayed, your dog or cat will no longer have a heat cycle, thereby reducing blood stains and frequent urination. Your spayed pet will also be infertile, eliminating the possibility of any painful births.
Pets that have had a spay or neuter animal surgery tend to live longer lives. We see it all the time at our veterinary clinic; spayed and neutered cats and dogs living long and healthy lives versus those who are not. Not only are spayed and neutered pets less prone to certain common diseases, but they are also less prone to injuries that result from mating behaviors.
Serving Durham and Chapel Hill, the New Hope Animal Hospital believes that spaying or neutering your pet is the responsible course of action. As our veterinarians will tell you, spayed and neutered pets are healthier, live longer and are freed from the pain of giving repeated births.

Durham Animal Hospital Recommends Planning
for Holiday Pet Boarding
The holidays are coming. If you are planning a trip to visit friends and family, New Hope Animal Hospital serving Durham and Chapel Hill pets, recommends that you plan your dog or cat boarding needs in advance. Unless those that you will visit have specifically mentioned that your pet is welcome, save your four legged family member the stress and anxiety of travel.
Boarding at Our Animal Clinic is Safe and Secure
Along with cat and dog boarding, our clinic will board hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits. With an experienced veterinarian on site during hospital hours, your pet will be safe, secure and relaxed while you are away. Our guests receive lots of attention so they will not feel alone. Along with attention from our trained, caring staff, pet suites have windows so your pet can keep up with the outdoor activities of birds, small wild animals, and squirrels, which we know always intrigue dogs.
If your pet plays well with others, they will enjoy our supervised play groups when they are outside three to four times every day for around 15 to 20 minutes each play time. Should your pet like to play alone, they will enjoy time with our animal care staff. In both cases, they will feel like they are wanted and loved.
If your pet takes medicine regularly, our staff will be happy to maintain their schedule per your request. For the safety of all furry guests, dog and cat borders should be up-to-date with all immunizations. For dog boarding, canine guests must have rabies and distemper-parvo vaccinations, along with a bordetella intestinal parasite check. Cat boarding guests should have a valid vaccination for rabies and feline distemper.
Plan ahead for the holidays so your pet can enjoy the season, even if the family is away for a while. Our guests will enjoy a safe and anxiety-free holiday season, while you reconnect with family and friends.
