What is Heartworm Disease?

What is heartworm disease?

Heartworm disease is a life-threatening condition spread by mosquitoes. Heartworms live in the chambers of your pet's heart and adjacent blood vessels, restricting blood flow, and can cause organ failure and death. Visible signs of heartworm disease may not appear for a full year after infection. Once present, these parasites cause extreme fatigue, cough, and labored breathing.

Early heartworm detection followed by proper treatment is vital to your pet's health. Plus, heartworm disease is an easily preventable disease! A simple monthly medication helps prevent active heartworm infections. Annual check-ups and a thorough heartworm exam should be performed before giving your pet any preventive medications.
