Wondering if you should spay or neuter your pet? At New Hope Animal Hospital, our main goal is to keep your pet healthy and safe and why we educate our patients on the importance of spay and neuter. Our guide helps answer common questions you may have about the spay and neuter procedures.

5 Commonly Asked Questions About Spay And Neuter For Our Vet

1. How old should my puppy or cat be for this surgery?

Puppies and kittens should be two months old and weigh at least two pounds to qualify for the procedure. Unsure of your pet's age? We can help determine this at a visit with our veterinarian.

2. What does a spay and neuter surgery entail?

During a spay surgery, your female will be given anasthetia and her uterus and ovaries will be removed and she will be stitched up. Your male pet will be given a face mask to administer anesthetia. Our vet makes a small incision in the scrotum to remove your pet's testicles. We will give your pet some time to wake up from their surgery and check ther vitals. If your female pet is in heat during the surgery, the procedure may take longer.

3. How long will it take my pet to recover?

We suggest you check your pet's wound twice daily and limit their activity to be sure they do not disturb the wound. This process should take about 14 days.

4. How long does a typical surgery take?

Our Durham vet will take a very short time to perform the surgery in most cases. Neuter surgeries are very short lasting only minutes while spay surgeries take about 30-90 minutes.
